Bayern Munich Humiliate Barcelona 8-2 to Reach Champions League Semifinals

A Night to Forget for Barcelona

In a match that will live long in the memory of football fans, Bayern Munich absolutely demolished Barcelona 8-2 in the quarterfinals of the Champions League on Friday. The German champions were ruthless from the start, scoring four goals in the first half and adding another four in the second. Philippe Coutinho, on loan from Barcelona, scored two goals against his former club, while Robert Lewandowski, Thomas Muller, and Ivan Perisic also got on the scoresheet. Barcelona's misery was compounded by the sending off of Gerard Pique in the second half. The Spanish defender was shown a straight red card for a reckless challenge on Lewandowski.

How It Happened

Bayern took the lead after just four minutes when Thomas Muller fired home a low cross from Alphonso Davies. The German champions doubled their advantage in the 21st minute when Coutinho scored a stunning goal from outside the box. Barcelona pulled one back through Luis Suarez in the 57th minute, but Bayern quickly restored their two-goal lead when Coutinho scored his second of the night just three minutes later. The floodgates then opened for Bayern, as Lewandowski scored in the 69th minute, Perisic in the 72nd minute, and Muller again in the 82nd minute. Barcelona's humiliation was complete when Corentin Tolisso scored Bayern's eighth goal in the 89th minute.

What Next?

Bayern Munich will face either Manchester City or Lyon in the semifinals of the Champions League. The first leg of the semifinal is scheduled for August 19, with the second leg on August 26. Barcelona, meanwhile, will have to lick their wounds and try to rebuild their shattered team. The Spanish giants have now lost four of their last five matches in all competitions.
